A matter of principles

everything that guides Bellwether

A 2D illustrated sheep in brushstroke style. It wears a bell around its neck and has a defiant hoof raised, with its head looking backwards - capturing a sense of stoic wisdom.

1

One fixed variable

If we can work fast, we will.

If we need to work slowly, we will.

The one constant, regardless of everything else, is quality.

Quality will never be sacrificed when we work together. That’s a promise I make with both of us in mind.

2

Do it Dutch

Some of my first few clients were Dutch. Once, one started a call with a question:

“Do you mind if I’m Dutch on this call?”

We proceeded to cover everything we needed in 10 minutes, with clear instructions for next steps, expectations for future results, and with zero fluff or filler.

I’ll never be rude or unkind. I’ll always try to be Dutch.

3

Mutual investment

You care about your business, I care about mine. While we work together, I expect us to both act with care.

I will invest all I can into getting the results you want and making our collaboration ridiculously successful.

I ask that you invest in treating me fairly as a supplier and providing what I need to get things done.

This is a professional partnership. We do things right and that starts with how we treat each other.

4

All words sourced from a human brain

You’ll never receive AI-written content from Bellwether.

The only ways I use generative AI are to:

  • Get a word off the tip of my tongue
  • Sense-check phrasing or calculations
  • Talk through a topic, if I’m working something out

If I use SEO/content planning software, these might suggest ways to structure an article. I’ll always make the final call, but take these suggestions on board as part of my planning.

5

Search optimised,
reader prioritised

All long-form writing produced by Bellwether is written with SEO performance in mind.

It’s not written for search engines, but for the humans who use search engines. Humans who read and become customers, who need to be convinced, reassured, and informed.

Writing for SEO can help us climb the rankings, but writing for humans will help us achieve that and much more.

6

Value for money isn’t cheap

There are cheaper writers available, if price is a sticking point. Visit your freelancer marketplace of choice and you’ll find somebody for pennies on my pound.

The quality tends to follow a similar ratio. And the workflow. And the reliability. And all the rest of it.

My rates are in line with industry averages (according to multiple reports). My work is well above that standard.

You’ll get value for money with Bellwether, but not because you’ve paid pennies.

7

Writing on purpose

Whatever we’re writing, we will have a clear reason for it.

Scattergun ideas – quick hits posted because “it’s been a while” – are on the Bellwether blacklist.

Everything we publish together will serve a purpose. Anything else can stay in the drafts.

8

Taking time off seriously

I take regular breaks and am unavailable for calls, writing or anything work-related in those weeks.

If we’ve got an ongoing arrangement, I’ll do what’s needed to cause minimal disruption to our agreed work.

If we’re working on a project that falls across one of my breaks, I’ll account for this in our timelines and planning.

Work won’t be disrupted and I’ll be well-rested. We all win.

Thanks for looking

Some clients won’t be too bothered about this stuff. Most are, though. The fact you’re reading this shows me that you’re at least interested in how I try to do things, how I’m going to work with you.

That counts for something and I’m grateful that you’ve taken the time to read this part of my website.

Thanks, pal.
